Varietal Selection 

1. Select variety that is adapted to local conditions; 

2. The variety should be high yielding and giving desired maturity period; 

3. The variety should be resistant to major pests, diseases, and soil problems in possible area of cropping; 

4. It should be of good market and coking/eating quality; 

5. Preferably certified seeds. 

Things to note 

· Rice varieties are ecology specific 

· Select varieties that have market demand 

· Select from current improved rice varieties that have market value. 

Lowland:

FARO 44: early maturing (100-115) days, for shallow swamps and irrigated ecology. 

FARO 52: medium maturity (120-135) medium deep swamps and irrigated ecology. 

FARO 57: medium maturity (120-135), medium deep swamps and irrigated ecology. 

Upland: 

FARO 46: early maturity (100-110 days) 

FARO 55: early maturity (100-110 days) 

FARO 56: early maturity (100-110 days) 

FARO 53: 48 and 49; medium maturity (120-125 days) 

FARO 58: early maturity (95-100 days NERICA 7) 

FARO 59: early maturity (95-100 days NERICA 8) 

Seed Treatments to be considered 

· Treat seed with fungicide, and or insecticide and rodeniticide if rodents' damage of sown seeds is envisaged. 

· Pre-germinate before sowing by soaking for 12 hrs and incubating for 24-36 hours to reduce maturation period.
